Thirty five years ago, the issues theme would have left readers scratching their heads- the term permaculture did not exist. Today, while not yet familiar in the mainstream has become a house hold word in many communities. To assure that readers are up to speed with the word permaculture let me explain.
Permaculture is an approach to designing human settlements and agricultural systems modeled on the relationship found in nature.
The theme originally was developed by Australia Bill Mollison during the 70's. The word referred to permanent agriculture'and expanded on social aspects found in nature on a truly sustainable system and looking at plants and animals in all of their functions, rather than treating any area as a single project system.
This is way I grew up with my French grandmother who came to this country in the 30's from Provence France and homesteaded on a farm in rural Wisconsin, lived in her garden, raised chickens and goats and milked her owns cows and baked he own bread, to sustain her family of 9, she lived to be to be 104.)
She cared for the Earth and the village people, she was salt of the earth.
